Proteins can exist in many conformations. Some of these states although functionally important are of higher energy and thus their population is so small that cannot be detected easily. We aim to capture these lowly-populated states and characterise them in atomic detail using NMR spectroscopy. The image above shows our attempts at investigating the dynamic energy landscape of the DNAJB6 chaperone which is able to respond to various physiological factors
Another are of interest in which excited states play a crucial role are the early stages of protein aggregation. The figure above shows the various species involved in the the pathological aggregation of the protein β2-microglobulin
